menstrual education, empowerment & celebration

I am thrilled to welcome you to First Moon Circles®

Supporting fellow menstruators to create an intuitive relationship with their menstrual cycle so that they may live their most vibrant, feels amazing life, is heart and soul aligned work for me. What has become apparent is that for some of us, our entry into our first period and introduction to puberty and menstruation has been less than ideal. Either through lack of information, education, understanding, acknowledgement, celebration, or a combination. The way we have entered this significant moment in our lives, sets up and influences how we will experience our menstruating years, our connection to our body and its cyclical rhythm.

I believe that self-aware, empowered and informed children, make for thriving adults. So I am deeply honoured and proud to be a certified First Moon Circle® Facilitator, supporting tweens towards a happy and healthy entry into their menstruating years.

So, what is a First Moon Circle®?

First Moon refers to a person's first period - their menarche.

First Moon Circle® is group education and celebration of this very important and powerful rite of passage.

It celebrates and empowers children through their first period, by offering playful education sessions, sharing what they may expect to experience, and how they may care for themselves, physically, emotionally and spiritually, as they grow, evolve and mature into adolescence.

First Moon Circles® are a beautiful, empowering alternative to traditional period education, featuring craft, conversations and a special parent-child celebration. It is a sacred, love filled, and most importantly FUN space for children to gather in circle to receive knowledge and tools to start their first periods with ease, flow, and comfort.

Who is a First Moon Circle® for?

First Moon Circles® are for 9-12 years olds, who have started their period is the past 1-2 years, or who haven't started their bleed yet.

Every child is welcome - girls, transgender boys, non-binary children, Black, Brown, Indigenous and Children of Colour, children living with a disability or a marginalised identity.

What happens at a First Moon Circle®?

First Moon Circles® are a 3hr in-person experience, split into 2 parts

Part 1: Periods, puberty and cycles

We start with a 2h experience just for the group to come together, have fun, be silly, make new friends, and learn accurate information about what's happening to their physical body, as well as their emotional and spiritual selves as they approach and encounter menarche (the first period, or first moon).

Here First Mooners learn about:

🌙  What periods are, what is puberty, and what happens during this stage of development, as well as what they can expect to sense and feel within their body and emotions,

🌙  An introduction to the physical body, specifically ovaries, uterus, vagina & vulva, female sex hormones, and the reproductive system,

🌙  An introduction to Menstrual Cycle Awareness (remember, the period is just 1 part of a 4-stage cycle!) and how our energy, superpowers and needs change across the month,

🌙  An introduction to cycle self-care (for example: why is rest important; why it is ok if suddenly we may feel a bit cranky or how to nurture themselves through the pre-menstrual phase,

🌙  Body and earth friendly period product options and a change to place with different options, and

🌙  They can ask me any and all awkward, embarrassing, curios questions they've not felt able to ask yet

Part 2: Celebrating with our loved ones

A celebratory afternoon tea where parents or primary caregivers are invited to join us to share what the children have discovered, whilst the elders are invited to share positive guidance and beautiful wishes they have for the children in their lifetime.

Here the intentions are to:

🌙  Role model that it is possible to talk openly about periods and puberty amongst friends and adults.

🌙  Give the parents or primary caregivers an opportunity to affirm the positive learning and experience, and to encourage the children to be able to talk to them about personal topics.

🌙  Parents or primary caregivers share wisdom with everyone present, which helps the children feel supported and remember that they are not alone, and that all people who menstruate before them have been through the same experience.

🌙  Children share what they have learned with the adults which will no-doubt offer new knowledge for the adults!

🌙  To celebrate a very special time in a child's life - and to frame the natural process as normal, healthy, magical, and a time a child meets their power.

How do participants benefit from going to a First Moon Circle®?

First Moon Circles® are absolutely overflowing with value:

🌙  Each participant will leave feeling more confident and empowered with greater knowledge, understanding and acceptable of what's to come, and how powerful, important, special and transformational this phase of their life is.

🌙  Parents or primary caregivers, and participants are supported to open up conversations to discuss periods and puberty (and who know what else!) afterwards, having been held in the safe space of circle where this talk is safe and normalised.

🌙  If siblings, cousins or friends attend together, then they gain the added benefit of togetherness, connection, community or sisterhood, having this shared experience to refer back to, and to share wisdom with their peers.

🌙  Parents or primary caregivers are supported to learn this wisdom alongside their child, feel safe and heard and be guided with tools and language to support their child.

🌙  And often, if the parent or primary caregiver also menstruates (or has menstruated) they are able to heal part of their own relationship to their menarche and menstruation, through giving their child the support they wish they'd had as a child, and learning about their own cycles.
